Why Palm Valley fishes so well
Palm Valley is a narrow, protected run of the Intracoastal Waterway lined with spartina marsh, tidal creeks and oyster bars. There is no long ocean run and no big open water to cross. The skiff is fishing within minutes of leaving the ramp.
That protection matters. When the wind makes the inlets and the beach unfishable, the creeks here are often calm enough for a comfortable trip, which is one reason it suits families and first timers.
How the tide sets the day
On high water the marsh floods and redfish push up into the grass to feed. That is when an 18-foot Maverick skiff earns its keep, easing across shallow water that bigger boats cannot reach.
As the tide falls, the fish drain out of the grass with the bait and set up on creek mouths, points and oyster edges. Captain Wills plans each start time around which of those windows will fish best.
